Charley Chatty and the wiggly worry worm - Höfundar: Sarah Naish og Rosie Jefferies
Charley Chatty likes to talk. Charley talks so much that her mouth gets dry but there's just so much to say! "Why is the pavement brown?" "I have got two shoes. Everyone has two shoes." She doesn't mean to but she likes how it makes her feel important and the wiggly worry worm inside her belly goes away. Written by a mum who understands, and her daughter (who also liked to tell tales), this is a story for children functioning at age 3-10. Höfundar: Sarah Naish og Rosie Jefferies

The pink guide to adoption for lesbians and gay men - Höfundur: Nicola Hill

The pink guide to adoption for lesbians and gay men - Höfundur: Nicola Hill
Can lesbian and gay couples adopt jointly? Is the adoption process any different to that for heterosexual adopters? Is it true that only “hard to place” children get placed with lesbians and gay men? The Pink Guide to Adoption has the answers to these and many more key questions. This revised and updated second edition of our popular step-by-step guide is essential reading for lesbians and gay men who are considering adoption in the UK. For both single adopters and same-sex couples wishing to adopt jointly, the first part of the book explores the adoption process and examines how being a prospective lesbian or gay adopter can and does affect every aspect of this. Illustrated throughout with quotations from those who have already experienced, or are currently involved in, the adoption process, the guide also has useful points to consider for those wishing to embark on the adoption journey. The second part consists of the stories of several lesbians and gay men at various stages of the adoption process. Some are single adopters, most are in couples, and all are at different stages. Informative and inspiring, these stories bring to life the reality of what adoption means. They describe the highs and lows, the welcome they have received and also the prejudices encountered, the difficulties and the rewards. Many reveal how their lives have changed immeasurably since their adopted children moved in. A must for any lesbian or gay man wishing to adopt, The Pink Guide to Adoption will also provide insights for social workers on what lesbian and gay adopters can offer.

Message from an unknown Chinese mother - Höfundur: Xinran

Message from an unknown Chinese mother - Höfundur: Xinran
Message from an Unknown Chinese Mother is made up of the stories of Chinese mothers whose daughters have been wrenched from them, and also brings us the voices of some adoptive mothers from different parts of the world. These are stories which Xinran could not bring herself to tell previously - because they were too painful and close to home. In the footsteps of Xinran's Good Women of China, this is personal, immediate, full of harrowing, tragic detail but also uplifting, tender moments. Ten chapters, ten women and many stories of heartbreak, including her own: Xinran once again takes us right into the lives of Chinese women - students, successful business women, midwives, peasants, all with memories which have stained their lives. Whether as a consequence of the single-child policy, destructive age-old traditions or hideous economic necessity... these women had to give up their daughters for adoption, others were forced to abandon them - on city streets, outside hospitals, orphanages or on station platforms - and others even had to watch their baby daughters being taken away at birth, and drowned. Here are the 'extra-birth guerrillas' who travel the roads and the railways, evading the system, trying to hold onto more than one baby; naive young student girls who have made life-wrecking mistakes; the 'pebble mother' on the banks of the Yangzte still looking into the depths for her stolen daughter; peasant women rejected by their families because they can't produce a male heir; and finally there is Little Snow, the orphaned baby fostered by Xinran but 'confiscated' by the state. The book sends a heartrending message from their birth mothers to all those Chinese girls who have been adopted overseas (at the end of 2006 there were over 120,000 registered adoptive families for Chinese orphans, almost all girls, in 27 countries), to show them how things really were for their mothers, and to tell them they were loved and will never be forgotten.

Anything but easy: A memoir of a special needs adoption from China - Höfundur: Marie Spiess
Tender, heartfelt, and brutally honest, Anything but Easy by Marie Spiess is an insightful memoir of her family's experience adopting a toddler with special needs from China. In eight moving chapters with titles like "The Paperwork Chase" and "The Waiting Game," Spiess recounts how fate played a role and how it came to be that Zhuge Juanzi, a little girl born with a cleft lip and palate half way around the world, made an otherwise perfect family extraordinary. Readers learn that it was a tough journey of unconditional love for a child the family had never met; it was anything but easy, and, yet, it was worth each setback and every delay. With clear advice, the author describes what to expect when couples first meet the adopted child, what the first few months look like, as well as what siblings might anticipate. For families considering the adoption of a child with special needs, here's an insider's account-and a loving reflection of what it took to fulfill one mother's dream.

Adopting the hurt child - Höfundar: Gregory C. Keck, Ph.D., and Regina M Kupecky, Ls.W.
Fewer and fewer families today are able to bring home a healthy newborn infant. The majority of adoptions now involve emotionally wounded, older children who have suffered the effects of abuse or neglect in their birth families and carry complex baggage with them into their adoptive families. ADOPTING THE HURT CHILD addresses the frustrations, heartache, and hope surrounding the adoptions of these special-needs kids. Written in a non-technical style accessible to a diverse audience, this book brings to light the grim truths, but also real hope that children who have been hurt - and often hurt others - can be healed and brought back into life by the adoptive and foster parents, therapists, teachers, social workers, and others whose lives intersect with theirs.

Mei mei (little sister) - Höfundur: Richard Bowen

Mei mei (little sister) - Höfundur: Richard Bowen
The Chinese believe an unseen red thread joins those in this life who are destined to connect. For photographer Richard Bowen, that thread led him to China's state-run welfare institutions, where there are thousands of children, primarily girls, growing up without families to take care of them. Mei Mei presents a poignant glimpse of just a few of these remarkable children. Composed against neutral backgrounds, these portraits capture the girls inner lives, away from their often bleak surroundings. The images show an almost endless range of expressions: small faces filled with longing and hope, joy and sadness, humor and mischief, defiance and despair. Through the camera's eye these young children are no longer orphans, but individuals whose personalities are as vital, distinct, and beautiful as any mother's child. When that unique human being comes into focus, the connection is made and the red thread becomes visible. And once seen, the bond can never be broken.

Achieving success with impossible children - Höfundur: Dave Ziegler, Ph.D.
From the Author of Raising Children Who Refuse to Be Raised and Traumatic Experience and the Brain comes this third book in the difficult children trilogy. For more than 30 years, Dr. Dave Ziegler has been a psychologist, therapist, and foster parent to hundreds of the most challenging children. His methods have helped these "impossible" children--and their parents, teachers, and caregivers--to get back on the right track. He has done what many therapists don't know how to do: help to raise troubled youths, who are the exceptions to all the usual rules, into healthy, successful human beings. This book emphasizes an important element of being successful with difficult children hope. The repeated message is not only that success is possible, but also that it is realistically achievable. However, success comes only with the right type of hard work combined with a deep understanding of what troubled children need. If success with your child is escaping your grasp, you'll find some help in these pages.

The diary of Ma Yan - Höfundur: Pierre Haski

The diary of Ma Yan - Höfundur: Pierre Haski
My father gave me and my brother a little money. My stomach is all twisted up with hunger, but I don't want to spend the money on anything as frivolous as food. Because it's money my parents earn with their sweat and blood. I have to study well so that I won't ever again be tortured by hunger. . . In a drought-stricken corner of rural China, an education can be the difference between a life of crushing poverty and the chance for a better future. But money is scarce, and the low wages paid for backbreaking work aren't always enough to pay school fees. Ma Yan's heart-wrenching, honest diary chronicles her struggle to escape hardship and bring prosperity to her family through her persistent, sometimes desperate, attempts to continue her schooling. First published in France in 2002, the diary of ma yan created an outpouring of support for this courageous teenager and others like her -- support that led to the creation of an international organization dedicated to helping these children . . . all because of one ordinary girl's extraordinary diary.

China the beautiful - Höfundur: Anthony Osmond-Evans
A record of its author’s extensive travels through the country, from the Silk Road to Tibet, the Huangshan Mountains to Guizhou province, China The Beautiful has been designed as a feast for the eyes. It follows not the usual photo-travel progression from one region to another, but a series of colour, geometrical and tone themes in which vibrant red might be viewed against glowing crimson, or cool countryside tones repeated on a facing page. Many of these images have a quality of the miraculous; such as including the Kazakh horseman who emerged, to the photographer’s astonished delight, through a waterfall and the Beijing acrobat captured in performance as a tea set descends through the air to land on her head. With additional photographic contributions from John Slater, Gina Corrigan and Lorraine Felkin, China The Beautiful takes the reader on a magical journey to the Silk Road and beyond and provides a lasting record of an eternally fascinating ancient land.

Meeting Sophie: A memoir of adoption - Höfundur: Nancy McCabe

Meeting Sophie: A memoir of adoption - Höfundur: Nancy McCabe
The baby is screaming again. My baby. I hoist her off the narrow hotel bed--again--and try to cradle her as I rock my torso back and forth in an uncomfortable straight-backed chair. This baby does not cradle. She doesn't know how to cuddle, to be soothed in anyone's arms. She howls and arches away, squirms and flops, a sixteen-pound fish out of water. I'm not used to holding babies, and she's not used to be being held, but when I try to put her down, she wails. My arms feel chafed, raw, and my wrists ache from the hours of straining to hang on to her. Huge tears pool in her eyes. These tears could break my heart. These screams could break my eardrums. After years as a temporary college instructor with no real home—her family and longtime friends scattered—Nancy McCabe yearned to settle down, establish a place she could call home, and rear a child there. A tough academic job market led her to accept a position at a church-connected college in the deep South, a move that felt like an uneasy return to the conservative environment of her childhood that she thought she had left behind. McCabe had many reservations about rearing a child alone in this climate, but the desire to become a mother would not go away. Meeting Sophie tells the story of McCabe adopting a Chinese daughter and the many obstacles she faced during the adoption and adjustment process as she renegotiated her role within her family and fought difficulties in her job. Especially poignant is her struggle to bond with a sick, grieving baby while in a foreign country during political unrest—followed, upon her return to the U.S., by a devastating loss and a career crisis.

Janis Cooke Newman first saw the baby who would become her son on a videotape. He was 10 months old and naked, lying on a metal changing table while a woman in a white lab coat and a babushka tried to make him smile for the camera. Four months later, the Newmans traveled to Moscow to get their son. Russia was facing its first democratic election, and the front-runner was an anti-American Communist who they feared would block adoptions. For nearly a month, the Newmans spent every day at the orphanage with the child they'd named Alex, waiting for his adoption to be approved. As Russia struggled with internal conflict, the metro line they used was bombed, and another night, the man who was to sign their papers was injured in a car-bombing. Finally, when the Newmans had begun to consider kidnapping, their adoption coordinator, through the fog of a hangover, made the call: Alex was theirs. Written with a keen sense of humor, The Russian Word for Snow is a clear-eyed look at the experience of making a family through adoption.

Clinical and practice issues in adoption - Höfundar: Victor Groza og Karen F. Rosenberg

Clinical and practice issues in adoption - Höfundar: Victor Groza og Karen F. Rosenberg
Experts representing practitioners, researchers, advocates, and triad members, explore the similarities and differences between adoptees placed as infants and as older children. The book promotes better integration of theory, practice, policy, and research in working with clients who are members of the adoption triad: adoptees, birth parents, and adoptive families. For the first time, the separate practice areas are bridged, pointing out the significant overlap between the two populations and the similar interventions that can be used when working with adoptees regardless of their age at placement. Developed as a resource text for practitioners, researchers, students, and adoptive triad members, the first chapter provides an overview of the clinical and practice issues. Next the work presents issues surrounding infertility, and explores identity development with a following chapter on search and reunion issues. The fifth chapter discusses adoption support, both historically and with current developments and issues. The work then examines ethics and offers a model for ethical adoption practice. The seventh chapter explores treatment issues from a family systems perspective. Chapter 8 discusses the issues in transracial adoptions, examining history, policy, research and practice. The final chapter offers an analysis of international adoption, one of the modes of adoption that has expanded greatly over the last 10 years.

The lost daughter of China - Höfundur: Karin Evans

The lost daughter of China - Höfundur: Karin Evans
In 1997 journalist Karin Evans walked into an orphanage in southern China and met her new daughter, a beautiful one-year-old baby girl. In this fateful moment Evans became part of a profound, increasingly common human drama that links abandoned Chinese girls with foreigners who have traveled many miles to complete their families. At once a compelling personal narrative and an evocative portrait of contemporary China, The Lost Daughters of China has also served as an invaluable guide for thousands of readers as they navigated the process of adopting from China. However, much has changed in terms of the Chinese government?s policies on adoption since this book was originally published and in this revised and updated edition Evans addresses these developments. Also new to this edition is a riveting chapter in which she describes her return to China in 2000 to adopt her second daughter who was nearly three at the time. Many of the first girls to be adopted from China are now in the teens (China only opened its doors to adoption in the 1990s), and this edition includes accounts of their experiences growing up in the US and, in some cases, of returning to China in search of their roots. Illuminating the real-life stories behind the statistics, The Lost Daughters of China is an unforgettable account of the red thread that winds form China?s orphanages to loving families around the globe.

Facilitating developmental attachment - Höfundur: Daniel. A Hughes

Facilitating developmental attachment - Höfundur: Daniel. A Hughes
This book shows how to work successfully with emotional and behavioral problems rooted in deficient early attachments. In particular, it addresses the emotional difficulties of many of the foster and adopted children living in our country who are unable to form secure attachments. Traditional interventions, which do not teach parents how to successfully engage the child, frequently do not provide the means by which the seriously damaged child can form the secure attachment that underlies behavioral change. Dr. Daniel Hughes maps out a treatment plan designed to help the child begin to experience and accept, from both the therapist and the parents, affective attunement that he or she should have received in the first few years of life. Hughes' approach includes: ―Using foster and adopted parents as co-therapists ―Teaching differentiation between old and new parents ―Overcoming the perception of discipline as abusive ―Framing misbehavior, discipline, conflicts, and parental authority as important aspects of a child's learning to trust. All children, at the core of their beings, need to be attached to someone who considers them to be very special and who is committed to providing for their ongoing care. Children who lose their birth parents desperately need such a relationship if they are to heal and grow. This book shows therapists how to facilitate this crucial bond.

Mao Zedong poems

Mao Zedong poems
Mao Zedong (1893–1976), 1st Chairman of the Communist Party of China & leader of the People's Republic of China for nearly 30 years, wrote poetry, starting in the 1920s, during the Red Army's epic retreat during the Long March of 1934-36 & after coming to power in 1949. Mao's poems are in the classical Chinese verse style, rather than the newer Modern Chinese poetry style. Tho Mao may not be one of the best Chinese poets, his poems are generally considered well-written & of high literary quality. As did most Chinese intellectuals of his generation, Mao received rigorous education in Chinese classical literature. Thus his skill in poetry is of little surprise. His style was deeply influenced by the "Three Lis" of the Tang Dynasty: poets Li Bai, Li Shangyin & Li He. He's considered to be a romantic poet, in contrast to the realist poets represented by Du Fu. Many of Mao's poems are frequently quoted in popular culture, literature & daily conversations. Some of well-known poems are "Changsha" (1925), "The Double Ninth" (1929.10), "Loushan Pass" (1935), "The Long March" (1935), "Snow" (1936.02), "The PLA Captures Nanjing" (1949.04), "Reply to Li Shuyi" (1957.05.11) & "Ode to the Plum Blossom" (1961.12).
